Global Development Scholars Program
What is the Global Development Scholars Program?
The Notre Dame Poverty Initiative seeks to establish Notre Dame as a leading institution for poverty research, preparing students for careers and service in anti-poverty efforts, and turning evidence into action, illuminating proven pathways out of poverty for people around the world. As a part of this student formation work, the Pulte Institute for Global Development’s Global Development Scholars program is offered for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career or further graduate studies in a poverty-related field. Global Development Scholars complete a two-semester rotational program in which they work closely with Pulte Institute faculty and staff on poverty-related projects through both research and practice. This experiential opportunity allows students to receive guidance and training through targeted mentorship, study poverty-related work through the lens of Integral Human Development, and hone key skills and competencies through hands-on engagement with real projects.
Who can be a Global Development Scholar?
The Pulte Institute seeks Juniors and Seniors with demonstrated interest and a track record of—and engagement with—poverty-related work and/or study. In exceptional cases, sophomores with proven research experience are considered. Three Global Development Scholars will be selected each academic year.
What do Global Development Scholars do?
Global Development Scholars complete two semesters (Fall/Spring) of guided, experiential work on Pulte Institute projects. Each semester, the scholar will work on at least one project, with supplemental training, targeting specific competencies necessary for effective careers in the anti-poverty space. Throughout both semesters, they receive mentorship and guidance from their projects’ technical leads as well as from the Global Development Scholars program coordinator. Scholars also engage with the “Discussions on Dignity” series, introducing them to key texts and thought pieces on dignity-affirming approaches to poverty alleviation. Global Development Scholars are expected to devote 6-8 hours per week to this program.
What is the compensation for Global Development Scholars?
Global Development Scholars receive a stipend of $2,000 each semester.
