Clean Water for Health
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) funded the Pulte Institute to conduct a final evaluation in Ghana, assessing the cleanliness of water used in households. In 2006, MCC signed a five-year compact with the Republic of Ghana, aimed at reducing poverty through agribusiness development. The water component of the project, designed to provide water systems to communities in Ghana, led to the construction of boreholes, small town water systems, and pipe extensions. Monitoring and Evaluation Specialists at the Pulte Institute, with the help of local enumerators, conducted a thorough evaluation of the water used in Ghanaian households.
The final evaluation conducted by the Pulte Institute focuses on the improved water systems, and whether or not, and to what extent, productivity and income increased within households as a result. The project aims to provide local populations with more time to spend on economic activity as a result of reduced time spent caring for the sick, and/or collecting water. Ideally, water sanitation methods will help to shift time formerly reserved for collecting water to income producing activities.
