In 1967, Saint Pope Paul VI introduced the concept of integral human development (IHD) in his encyclical letter, Populorum Progressio, declaring:

"Development cannot be limited to mere economic growth. In order to be authentic, it must be complete: integral, that is, it has to promote the good of every man and of the whole man."

In the 51 years since the release of Populorum Progressio, IHD has been expanded and promoted by subsequent popes and theologians, lay experts on Catholic social teaching, and organizations working in global development, such as the University of Notre Dame and Catholic Relief Services (CRS).

But what does it mean to practice IHD in today's evolving development landscape?

This interdisciplinary panel, featuring leading global development experts, will explore how everyone from students and academics to practitioners and policymakers can authentically incorporate the powerful philosophy of IHD into policy and practice. Panelists will include:

  • Annemarie Reilly, the Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President for Strategy and Organizational Development at CRS
  • Paul Perrin, the Director of Evidence and Learning at the Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development (NDIGD)
  • Lakshmi Iyer, the Director of the Master of Global Affairs' Sustainable Development Concentration at the Keough School of Global Affairs
  • Caroline Andridge, a current student in the Master of Global Affairs' Sustainable Development Concentration at the Keough School of Global Affairs

Tom Purekal, the Program Director of Innovation and Practice at NDIGD, will serve as the moderator of the panel. The panelists will also speak about their experiences applying IHD around the world and discuss the approaches they used, the challenges they faced and the lessons they learned.

This event is free and open to the public. Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and postdoctoral researchers within the Keough School or participating in an international program at Notre Dame are especially encouraged to attend this event.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
